Heartbreaking. An exceptionally short read but well worth the devotion of attention. I am revisiting this order from many years ago, and still remember dwelling on the story for so long afterward. I could see this being added to a reading list for mature, upper-grade students in high school or early college. It is not difficult in the literary sense, but emotionally appealing and challenging..

Martin Sherman's worldwide hit play Bent took London by storm in 1979 when it was first performed by the Royal Court Theatre with Ian McKellen as Max (a character written with the actor in mind). The play itself caused an uproar. It educated the world Sherman explains. People knew about how the Third Reich treated Jews and to some extent gypsies and political prisoners. But very little had come out about their treatment of homosexuals. Gays were arrested and interned at work camps prior to the genocide of Jews gypsies and handicapped and continued to be imprisoned even after the fall of the Third Reich and liberation of the camps. The play Bent highlights the reason why - a largely ignored German law Paragraph 175 making homosexuality a criminal offense which Hitler reactivated and strengthened during his rise to power.,Martin Sherman,Bent: The Play (Applause Books),Applause,1557833362,DRAMA European English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh,DRAMA General,Drama,Drama texts, plays,Drama: General,European - English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh,GENERAL,General Adult,LGBT,Non-Fiction,PERFORMING ARTS Theater General,Performing ArtsTheater - General,Performing Arts: Theater General,Plays,Plays Drama,Plays, playscripts,Playscript,Theater - General,United States,Western Europe

This is truly one of the most beautiful tales of friendship and love in hard times EVER written. Such a moving emotional piece of theatre this is.....I read this play about three to four times a year and every single time I end up in tears and I feel more alive for having read it. This is a MUST READ for anyone studying theatre or anyone who just wants to be moved deeply by something......So good.
I never realized how much grief homosexuals were given during the Holocaust. Even the Jewish people mocked them, The love scene (without contact) was also interesting. A great drama for the theatre goer.
Painful that it's still a conversation about weather to be safe and comfortable or to be "Out" and face the consequence of abuse and possible death.
Even when only read from a script, this play is an astounding experience. It's full of information about the appalling conditions of homosexuals in the Holocaust and opens one's eyes to so much that was barely known before the play's release in 1979. The story is heartbreaking yet is a very rewarding read which holds the reader's attention from the first page to the very last. I recommend seeing the play and I'm sure the movie (which I have yet to see) is very good, but I highly recommend reading this unforgettable script also.
This play is powerful and moving! I directed it a few years back and it still has a dear spot in my heart. Being Jewish and Gay, it resonated immensely. Read it!
Revisiting this play is as upsetting and moving as ever. It also talks of gay men as survivors who can and do love--even before the AIDS epidemic hit. It is an important chapter of our legacy. There will always be hate. There will always be survival. There will always be love--as long as we are human.
This play is incredible. It's quite difficult to even read, let alone see, let alone perform in. I had to purchase the play in order to read the whole thing, and not just the isolated scene I was given, for an acting class. It is intense. It is important. It has a rich history, which I'd recommend looking into before considering buying the play or considering performing it. I do recommend the play, don't get me wrong, but I can't stress enough that it's not for the faint of heart. It's brutal and difficult to take in, but ultimately worth the pain because the story is so potent and inspiring. A real game-changer, in many respects. Look it up, and if you're still interested, buy it and read the whole thing. A film was also made in 1997.
Heartbreaking. An exceptionally short read but well worth the devotion of attention. I am revisiting this order from many years ago, and still remember dwelling on the story for so long afterward.
