Magic Burns Kate Daniels Ilona Andrews Books

This book was the perfect example if you feel the author has good bones to her story, take the time to read the next book in the series and see how you feel. In "Magic Bites" the story felt awkward to me and I wished to have read more background on the heroine, Kate Daniels. Also, I wondered how the city of Atlanta had gotten to such a state of confusion and chaos....well, in this excellent second tale, "Magic Burns," not only do we learn both of the above, we are taken on a journey to try and restore Atlanta, at least in the hearts of it's current citizens.

Late Daniels, suddenly finds herself petitioned to do several jobs at once. All the jobs lead her to what easily could be a battle to the death. The Magic is into a fluctuation that releases a potent 'flare' every seven years. When magic lets loose the conditions in Atlanta are crazed. Buildings melt, shape-shifters have difficulty holding their 'human' shapes and more. It drives persons insane.

The flare is upon them, this time precious maps held sacred and close by the Pack are stolen and Kate's help is needed to retrieve them. What she finds is Gods and Goddesses fighting each other using Atlanta as their battleground. It will take Kate's powers, the Pack, The People, and the Witches to try and expel these 'foreigners.'

This is a fast pace, action packed, emotional book. Now, I really understand the power of Ms. Andrews pen.

Magic Burns Kate Daniels Ilona Andrews Books Reviews

It's odd to read a book expecting to dislike it. But such was the case with Magic Bites, the first installment in a reportedly fantastic Urban Fantasy series. Ever since I inhaled the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning in a week last summer, I've been searching for a new Urban Fantasy obsession. Although it's not a normal genre for me, when it's good, it's good. And apparently, once you reach the third book in this series, it's good.

Magic Bites, however? Not good nor even good. It's pretty bad. But I hope it's bad in a way that doesn't bode poorly for the rest of the series.

My concerns
1. snappy dialogue Kate appears to follow in the tradition of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She is always ready for danger, armed with both a sword and a comeback. The comebacks were grating. They are laughable but they don't make me laugh, if you can discern the distinction. I think they were supposed to show that Kate is spunky, a tough girl who doesn't put up with crap. But I don't think most tough girls would react with dialogue seemingly written by a low-level sitcom writer.

2. lack of overarching plot I've realized that my obsession with the Fever Series derived from its careful plotting. Each book built off the previous book so that by the time we reached the final book, I probably ripped some pages as I tore through it, desperate to solve long developed mysteries. Sadly, there doesn't appear to be a long-term game at play here.

3. overly descriptive writing I don't read Urban Fantasy for writing. I just don't. As long as the prose is readable, it's fine with me. As I said before, I'm here for crazy plots and interesting characters. The writing isn't bad here. Ironically, the problem is that the writing tries to be good. Scenes are bogged down by long sentences describing the scenery of the room. No no no. I just want the action please! It's the same annoyance I'd feel if the director of a straight-up action movie paused for a contemplative, minute long shot of the landscape.

My bright spots
1. Kate/Curran relationship if you remove the yucky comebacks, the conversational combat between these two characters is promising. They are both strong personalities and I predict the clashes between them as they get to know each other more will be awesomely explosive.

2. Supernatural world of Atlanta I'm into the mythology of the series. Basically, sometimes the world runs on technology, other times it runs on magic. During those magical times, bad stuff tends to happen, bad stuff Kate needs to clean up. Even the supernatural creatures are seemingly scientific--there are shapeshifters who become that way by contracting the Lycanthropic Virus.

Onward, to book two, Magic Burns, hoping my bright spots grow brighter and my concerns fade to obscurity
The second book in a series is incredibly important, especially when the first book was a debut novel. You pick it up wondering was that first great book, MAGIC BITES, a one-off? Can the author sustain that kind of strong character development, dynamic tension, tight plotting, and great writing? Will these books get better and better, or will they fizzle and fall apart?

Well, I am thrilled to say that MAGIC BURNS fulfills all the promise of MAGIC BITES and more. It's fantastic.

The novel opens as Atlanta buckles down for one of the most dangerous phenomena in the post-Shift world - a flare, when the balance between tech and magic goes out of whack and magic surges through the atmosphere with frightening intensity. Past flares have always left a wake of death and destruction, and this one promises to be no different.

Protagonist Kate Daniels is trying to solve several seemingly unrelated cases someone has been stealing precious maps from under the very sensitive noses of the shapeshifters, a street urchin calls in a favor and asks her to guard a girl with some very special powers, and a coven of poorly-trained witches have vanished into thin air. Eventually, all these subplots converge on one gigantic problem.

Kate, as a character, has only gotten better - fiercer, funnier, smarter, and kinder. Characters we met in the first book pop up again, most notably Curren the Beastmaster, Ghastek the necromancer, and Saiman the guru. Sparks fly between Kate and Curren, and a wise werehyena makes the reader wonder what Curren's intentions really are. Kate makes a new friend in Andrea, a Knight of the Order with a big secret, who I hope we see a lot more of.

The worldbuilding is stellar. Andrews has created a unique, fascinating alternate reality, and in this second book in the series she fleshes it out with mythological creatures, bodily fluids, the power of faith, and a few tantalizing hints about Kate's mysterious origins. All in all, MAGIC BURNS was an incredibly satisfying read, and I'll be waiting impatiently for the next book.
