So, the first thing I noticed was that the tags in this novel were Teen/Religious/Christian/Action & Adventure. There were other tags, but as soon as I saw Religious/Christian I got mildly worried. I have read books with those tags where it is overly preachy, which, for someone like me who doesn't have a real set of beliefs (I try to use many different aspects of many beliefs), is extremely annoying. But this book was not like that at all.

Yes, Prince Dvarius is religious. But the way J.C. Morrows wrote his belief was amazing. She made him realize that his faith was his. He never pushes it on other characters and even when it is mentioned, it's not over the top. The one portion where it is heavily used made sense for the character and for the overall plot of the story.

Now, to digress from that point. This book was breathtakingly beautiful. You have an assassin, Kayden, that is thrust into a life of luxury that she is unaccustomed to in order to assassinate Dvarius. On top of that, Dvarius is in a position where his father died, but he cannot be on the throne without a queen (because rules). They are both thrust into uncomfortable positions that they must deal with in order to get to their goal.

Honestly, there were two reasons I gave this four rather than five stars. One is due to the relationship that develops between Kayden and Dvarius. I realize that this is a work of fiction, but I felt at times their romantic attraction seemed to have no basis. Mainly because we see no real interactions between him and the other girls selected as potential spouses other than one girl he sends away, and Catarine.

The other reason is that there was a side character that would occasionally show up to be all pissy that Kayden was chosen for this job. But we get no real information on him and I was left wanting more about him. Hopefully in the next one! Because yes, I am continuing this series. Especially with the little sneak peek I read at the end of this novel.

A Reluctant Assassin Order of the MoonStone Volume 1 JC Morrows 9780692482728 Books Reviews

I hate to give bad reviews, but this book needs a lot of work. The entire book (which is very short, couldn't be more than 100 pages) is written awkwardly with the main character constantly having an internal dialogue. No character development at all. Seems like it could be an interesting story but needs to be rewritten.
Tried and true setting, if a bit more Hunger Games than King Arthur. Great story, deep characters, I want to learn more about them and the interactions between everyone. the characters as they are stay in their roles and move the story forward. Maybe I was hoping for more, but good read over all.
This book hits all the right notes of a YA romance without any excess. While it was a little short on description at times, I didn't mind that. Sometimes you just want the essence of story, not all of the extras. I certainly want to read more and learn what happens! A solid introduction. I only wish there had been a little more to the narrative. I enjoy a fast-paced story, but a little more might have been nice. Hopefully the next book will yield deeper developments!
Oh, no! A cliffhanger ending. Darn, I hate those. But I do look forward to learn more about Katlin's background. Although there are hints, all we really learn is that she is an orphan and was brought into an organization that trained her to be an assassin. She is sent into the palace to ingratiate herself in order to terminate the Prince before he takes on the Crown, but it proves to be a more difficult assignment than she anticipated.
This book starts with a great premise. What if Cinderella was an assassin, sent to kill the prince? This book is not so much a re-telling of Cinderella, as it is inspired by it. In fact, the story of Cinderella is mentioned in-world in the story.

The story is set in a future, after the fourth world war. Monarchy is once again a popular form of government.

In order to kill her target, the prince, Kayden must first get close to him. The more she does, the more she begins to question the things she's been told about him. This becomes the major conflict of the book.

A Reluctant Assassin serves as the first installment into a much larger story, and whets the appetite for what is to come. I would have liked a little more back-story into Kayden, but I believe a special-edition of this book has been published, with additional short stories that will likely serve this purpose well.
As soon as I saw this beautiful and intriguing cover I wanted to read this book. (Just wait until you see the cover for book 3, stunning!)
This book reminded me very much of "The Selection Series" but with a sinister twist. Kayden Argos is sent to masquerade as one of the hopefuls who will win the prince's heart, but she is sent to kill him. The book is set in the kingdom of Auralius, in a future time, although not futuristic in the science fiction sense. There are still castles and all gowns.

Prince Dvarius is not so sure he wants to choose a bride just yet. By the end of the book, readers come to an unexpected end that keeps you wanting to know more....(I don't want to divulge any secrets here) but in the end scene we meet Sir Alfried Malcom, which I am sure will probably be an interesting discovery as the story continues. The Order of the Moonstone is an underground resistance movement. Drey is a mysterious figure we hear about briefly, he is an important figure in this resistance. The story does not really center around him, but around Kayden and Dvarius and their struggles as they come to terms with their various roles in life.

The story ends on a cliffhanger and the second book in the Order of the Moonstone Series is called, " A Treacherous Decision"
I would recommend this book to a younger audience, it's clean and easy to read.

I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
